KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Texas Rangers lefthander Cliff Lee already was scheduled to have an extra day off before his next scheduled start. Good for him. He needs the rest. Since making his first start April 30, Lee has been busier than the Boston Red Sox's team trainer. He has worked more innings (184 1/3) and completed more games (seven) than any pitcher in the majors over the past four months. Only Seattle's Felix Hernandez has thrown more pitches.

The Boston Red Sox have activated catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and utility player Eric Patterson from the 15-day disabled list and recalled left-hander Dustin Richardson from Triple-A Pawtucket. Saltalamacchia was sidelined since Aug. 19 with a right lower leg infection, and Patterson was out with a neck sprain.

Having lost his spot in the Boston bullpen, Manny Delcarmen was traded with cash from the Red Sox to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday for minor league pitcher Chris Balcom-Miller. The Red Sox have faded in the AL playoff race while the Rockies are trying to stay close in the NL wild-card chase. Delcarmen was 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA in 48 games for Boston this season.
